Issaquah Parks & Recreation Offers Online Class Registrations

The City of Issaquah Parks & Recreation Department is delighted to offer customers the ability to register for recreation programs online.  The City is part of the E-Government Alliance, a consortium of neighboring cities seeking to promote and offer online services to their customers.    For the past two years, Issaquah has worked with neighboring cities to provide this flexible and convenient service.

The City has designed a setup that is easy to use for class registrations with a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section.

Those who are first-time users of Parks & Recreation programs will need to create a new account.  A client identification number and family pin number is assigned by the Parks Department.  For those who are regular patrons of the Parks & Recreation programs, a client identification number and family pin number were sent through the regular mail.  Both numbers are required to register for recreation programs online.

To modify an existing account, please call the Issaquah Parks & Recreation Department at 425-837-3300 or the Julius Boehm Pool at 425-837-3350 to make any changes to an existing account.

For more information about Issaquah Parks Online, please click HERE.

The City’s Police Department is currently focused on several public safety programs highlighted by:

  • Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness
The Police Department’s Special Operations Team (SOT) has been training in handling Civil Disobedience disturbances.  This training is part of the emergency planning for a terrorist event that could disrupt the civil order of our city or other cities in our region.  The Special Operations Team is available to other small cities that are part of the Coalition of Small Police Agencies which Issaquah joined in 2003.  In addition, other larger cities may need assistance from all cities in King County under the Statewide Emergency Mobilization Plan.
  • Bicycle Safety and the Helmet Ordinance
The Police Department is planning to sponsor another Bicycle Safety Fair this spring.  Details are being worked out on the date and time and will be announced soon.  This second Bicycle Fair will be one of the last public information efforts before our Police Officers begin to enforce the new Bicycle Helmet Ordinance.  For more information on the Ordinance, please click HERE.
  • Identity Theft Information Packets
The Police Department recently adopted a policy on Identity Theft and has put together informational packets for citizens who have been victims of this crime.  The information in the packet is intended to help the victim find resources to minimize the disruption in their lives that the theft of their identity can cause.

2004 – A Great Year for the City’s Sustainable Building Program

Over the last two years, the City has initiated and supported a Sustainable Building Program to help ensure the implementation of sustainable building measures in City facilities and other public and private sector projects.  The Sustainable Building Policy sets in place community standards for new construction based upon widely recognized and established sustainable building programs – including the LEED certification program for non-residential structures and the Built Green certification program for residential structures.

Sustainable building strategies can dramatically and cost-effectively improve environmental performances by reducing energy and water consumption, minimizing site impacts and stormwater runoff, protecting and restoring natural habitats and ecological processes, providing healthier indoor environments for building occupants and visitors, providing for alternative modes of transportation and utilizing resource-efficient building materials.

To date, some of the highlights are:

  • In 2003, the City successfully achieved LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Silver certification for Fire Station 73, the first LEED certified fire station in the nation and the first LEED Silver certified project in Washington.
  • Hosting the 2004 Built Green Conference at the Pickering Barn.  Approximately 200 planning, policy, engineering and design professionals attended the conference, raising awareness of green building among home builders in the community, highlighting local projects and recognizing Issaquah as a regional leader in green building.
  • Opening of the Built Green Idea Home.  A major effort last year was participation in the Idea Home Steering Committee, which guided the direction of this regional demonstration home.  The City took a lead role in the educational aspects of the house, providing docent training and coordination, educational seminars, and handouts on energy, water, and materials conservation.  Over 8,000 people visited the home over nine weekends.  The Golden Nugget award, a major west coast builder award, was given to the Idea Home.
  • Production of a Home Energy Performance Testing Video.  Copies of this video were given to attendees of the Built Green conference, and have been distributed to builders within the City via the Building Department.  In addition, the video has been promoted through several publications, including the Built Green newsletter, and distributed at Energy Star training seminars throughout the Puget Sound.
  • Building Permit Expediting for Two Private LEED Projects.  These projects are being built by Port Blakely Communities: Blakely Hall and the Block 8 retail area.
  • Green Builder of the Year Award.  This award was granted to DR Horton and the Dwelling Company for their green building achievements in the Issaquah Highlnds.
  • Technical Green Building Consultations.  Held with Life Care Services (the Talus continuing care facility), Issaquah Highlands Division 60 (affordable housing), Rowley Properties (hotel), a naturopathic clinic, the LOMA senior housing project, and the Sound Transit transit center.  In addition, consultations have been held with all homebuilders in the Issaquah Highlands and Talus.
  • Creation of the 4th and 5th Star Levels for Built Green.  The City's participation helped ensure the strength of these higher levels of sustainability for this green building rating program.
  • Adoption of the Sustainable Building and Infrastructure Policy.  Formalizing the City’s commitment to sustainable building, this policy places the City at the leading edge of a growing number of organizations recognizing the value and benefits of green building in its own facilities.
  • Establishing Private Sector Green Building Partnerships.  A number of Community Partners have made voluntary commitments to pursue sustainable building in concert with the City’s adoption of the Sustainable Building Policy.  These include:  Rowley Properties (Hotel, Hyla Crossing), the Issaquah School District (Issaquah Highlands Elementary), Port Blakely Communities (Issaquah Highlands non residential, retail and home builders in Divisions 61-65, 68-70 and 92-94), Life Care Services (Talus Continuing Care Facility) and Microsoft (Issaquah Highlands Office buildings).

We look forward to implementing the Sustainable Building Policy in the year ahead!
