Radar Speed Trailer
The Police Department has a Radar Speed Trailer which can be deployed to locations where the City receives requests for monitoring the speed of traffic.
The Speed Trailer reads the speed of an approaching vehicle and displays it on a large digital board on the trailer. Speeds at or less than the speed limit will be shown in a solid amber color and for speeds over the speed limit, it will display a flashing red readout. The speed limit sign for that particular roadway is placed above the digital display board. In addition, the trailer can also record each vehicles speed and provide statistical reports for use in the analysis of providing additional enforcement in that neighborhood and for determining other methods for reducing vehicle speeds.
The advantage of such a device is two-fold. This device provides positive feedback to the motorist of its speed and brings its speed to a higher level of attention letting them know to slow down if they are speeding. It serves as a warning to the motorist that they are being watched. Many times motorists are not aware they are speeding. From past use of such devices, other Cities have found that the critical speeds have reduced. The other benefit is that many times the residents complaining of motorists speeding will have a false sense of vehicle speeds. The trailer provides positive feedback to the residents to the speed at which motorists are traveling and gives them a good feel of vehicle speeds on their street. Placing the trailer on the residential streets for a period of time also demonstrates that the City is trying to do something about the speeding problem. With the ability to leave the trailer in place unattended, it saves money on staff time since it can be in place while it continues to provide a benefit to the neighborhood.
If you would like your street to be considered for monitoring please contact Officer John Lindner at 425-837-3247 or Officer Andrew Rohrbach at 425-837-3224 to sign up for the trailer. You should feel free to contact the traffic division by email at: IPDTraffic@ci.issaquah.wa.us
