Newport Way Northwest

Newport Way Northwest

From Northwest Maple Street to West Sunset Way

Why is the City of Issaquah improving Newport Way?

History

Historically, the roadway was first built as a 22-foot wide cement concrete road. Over time, the roadway was widened with asphalt pavement to 28 feet, but without adequate improvements to the roadway sub-grade. This has lead to deterioration and separation of the existing roadway pavement. Newport Way Northwest is now restricted from heavy truck traffic (heavier than 30,000 pounds) due to the condition of the roadway.

Current conditions

Newport Way Northwest currently includes one lane of vehicle traffic in each direction, as well as narrow shoulders (less than two feet), ditches and asphalt walking paths. From West Sunset Way to Northwest Maple Street, about half of the road is located in a school zone.

More vehicles are using Newport Way Northwest as a principal arterial and congestion is expected to continue increasing due to traffic entering and exiting from driveways and side streets.

For non-motorized users, there is a walking path mixed with a wide shoulder on the east side of Newport. On the west side, there is only a walking path for approximately half the length of the project corridor, creating a missing link to connect with the intersection of Northwest Maple Street and Newport. There are limited to no bicycle facilities along Newport.

The Newport corridor includes condominiums and apartments, as well as businesses. Currently there are no bus stop locations to serve these locations.

What will the end result be?

City's main goals

Through this project, the City’s aims to improve the following:

  • Safety and traffic flow
  • Facilities for cyclists and walkers
  • Stormwater management
  • Visual appeal of the corridor

Proposed road changes

To date, the City has developed two general options for Newport:

·         A three-lane alternative with a signalized intersection at Newport Way Northwest and Northwest Juniper Street only, or

·         A two-lane alternative with three roundabout intersections at Northwest Juniper Street, Northwest Holly Street and Northwest Dogwood Street.

As part of the City’s “Complete Streets” program, the proposed project would also improve connections for walkers, as well as add bicycle lanes.

New stormwater facilities – such as stormwater vaults, low-impact drainage facilities or stormwater ponds – would also be added. The City will also evaluate the addition of transit stops.

Do you have a project timeline?

We are currently in the public outreach phase of this project. Once a decision has been made on the alternative, design work will start.

To the top

What is the project’s funding status?

The project is funded for design and environmental documentation only. The City will be working toward grants for construction and possible right of way procurement.
