Seattle Tilth Garden Classes @ the Pickering Barn:

Harvest the Rain

This class is an overview of the many ways that rain may be stored for use in your vegetable or ornamental home garden. We will cover cisterns and rain barrel use, swales and rain gardens, as well as mulching techniques and green roofs. Participants will gain a better understanding of what may be right for their own garden and will receive the practical information needed in order to take the next step.

  • 10 a.m.-noon Feb. 20
  • $25 for Seattle Tilth members, $35 non-members.
  • Advance registration and payment are required. For more information and to register, click here.
  •

Worm Bin Composting

Composting your food waste at home is one of the best things an organic gardener can do to make your own nutrient rich soil amendment. In this seminar, the Seattle Tilth gardener will present and demonstrate do-it-yourself food waste composting systems for apartment dwellers, homeowners and everyone in between.

  • 6-7 p.m. March 11
  • $12 for Seattle Tilth members, $15 non-members.
  • Advance registration and payment are required. For more information and to register, click here.

Growing Perennial Edibles

Edible landscapes start in the vegetable garden but they needn’t end there. Explore how selecting edibles as landscape trees, shrubs and annuals can feed the family year round. In addition to traditional vegetable gardens, including multi-purpose elements in your plant selections creates a beautiful, flavorful landscape. This class will include a lecture and PowerPoint presentation and students will leave with a list of edible perennial plants that do well in our climate.

  • 7-9 p.m. March 25
  • $25 for Seattle Tilth members, $35 non-members.
  • Advance registration and payment are required. For more information and to register, click here.

Be Cistern Savvy!

Instead of storing 50 gallons in a rain barrel, why not store the thousands of gallons your roof collects in a cistern? Cisterns save you money, conserve water, prevent storm water pollution, and can remedy drainage issues. Cistern water can be used for your garden as well as for your indoor water needs. This workshop will cover the basics and benefits of cisterns, understanding the components of how a cistern works, how to customize a water harvesting system for you, how to get started and local resources.

  • 10-11:30 a.m. April 3
  • $18 for Seattle Tilth members, $25 non-members.
  • Advance registration and payment are required. For more information and to register, click here.

Comprehensive Organic Gardener Program

The Comprehensive Organic Gardener Program is an intensive program teaching organic vegetable gardening methods and practice. The curriculum merges scientific and practical information with an emphasis on experiential learning and hands on practice. This unique and popular course is designed to give the beginning gardener an introduction into the dynamic world of organic gardening and an opportunity to get their hands dirty in the process!

  • 7-9 p.m. Thursdays and 9 a.m.-2p.m. Saturdays May 6–May 27
  • $235 for Seattle Tilth members, $275 non-members.
  • Advance registration and payment are required. Some scholarship assistance is available. For more information and to register, click here.
